David Guez (born 1954, Tunisia) is a self-taught painter based in Jerusalem with an outstanding trajectory in contemporary painting. Having previously lived in Paris, and Los Angeles, Guez developed a unique artistic language that transcends cultural boundaries, articulating a universal visual aesthetic through abstraction.
His painting practice revolves around gestural compositions in oil on canvas, often on a large scale. These works establish a conceptual dialogue with sculpture, drawing inspiration from its monumentality and materiality. In an increasingly digital world, Guez’s art evokes both immediacy and timelessness, with each abstract gesture serving as a statement of his dynamic, almost sculptural approach to mark-making. Much like Morse code, his rhythmic and spontaneous brushwork creates a personal, subjective commentary on contemporary existence.
Guez’s work has been exhibited internationally, with solo shows at D&M Gallery and Rothschild 49 Gallery in Tel Aviv, as well as major group exhibitions such as Personal Structures: Reflections, an official Collateral Exhibition of the Venice Biennale at Palazzo Bembo, organized by the European Cultural Centre (2022).
In a world mediated by screens, I find inspiration in the tangible and the raw. As an abstract painter, my work explores materiality, gesture, and the complexities of identity and expression. My canvases serve as immersive portals, layering pigment and texture to capture human experience in an increasingly digital world.
Blending post-digital abstraction with spontaneity, my process echoes rhythmic patterns, reflecting my personality and psychological state. Each brushstroke is a snapshot of a fleeting moment—immediate yet timeless—bridging tradition and modernity.
Through my work, I invite viewers to embrace the tactile, to engage with the energy and emotion in each mark. My paintings celebrate the human spirit, offering a counterpoint to the digital age and a space for reflection, connection, and meaning.
