Nicola Barth (*1966 in Mölln, Germany) currently lives and works near Frankfurt am Main. Her academic background includes a master's degree in German studies, theater, film and television studies, and psychology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Originally devoted to literature and writing, Barth found a more intuitive, freer form of expression in painting in 1994, allowing her to explore existential and metaphysical questions in depth.
Barth has exhibited regularly since 2002, initially regionally in Hesse, and increasingly internationally since 2012 – including exhibitions in Italy, Switzerland, Greece, the USA, South Korea, and at prestigious events such as the London Art Biennale and World Art Dubai. Last year, she presented a major solo exhibition at the renowned CICA Museum in Gimpo, South Korea. Her work has been featured in numerous art publications, including "Contemporary Art Collectors Book," "Circle Quarterly Art Review," and "Collect Art."
Barth has received several major awards, including the "Artist of the Future Award" from Contemporary Art Curator Magazine, the "Artfacts Performance Award 2020" for the strongest ranking growth trend, and the "Collector's Vision International Art Award." Her works are included in public collections such as the CICA Museum, Gimpo (South Korea), and the city of Langen (Hesse), as well as in numerous private collections worldwide.
Nicola Barth's art focuses on metamorphosis, transformation, space, and identity. Her preferred media are oil, acrylic, and graphite, complemented by three-dimensional works and digitally enhanced photographs. Barth is known for her profound, enigmatic works, which often bear cryptic titles and invite the viewer to transcend norms and open themselves to new levels of perception. She is a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists (Darmstadt Regional Association) and GEDOK FrankfurtRheinMain.
My painting is a pause in a flux of possibilities, a freezing of a single moment amidst constant transformations and metamorphosis. I paint what I don't understand, but desperately want to understand – intuitively following my inner compass. My works depict not visible reality, but rather the indeterminate and underlying, the subtle processes of constant change, fragmentation, and reconfiguration.
I prefer to describe my work as non-representational, as I don't abstract anything, but rather draw directly from inner processes that generate their own shapes and spaces. Figurative associations arise, but are never intentional. Instead, my paintings move in those in-between spaces where identities and forms are impermanent and the existential becomes visible.
Central themes of my artistic practice are transformation, identity, language, and the human being as a fragmented individual searching for a place in the universe. Works like my series "Phoenix Photons" and "SpaceTimeMetamorphoses" explore the cosmic connection between the deepest ocean and infinite space—symbolized by my iconic figures, the astronaut and the octopus, metaphors for the spirit of exploration and adaptability.
My images are intended to invite the viewer to break out of traditional thought patterns and embark on a journey into hidden meta-levels and hidden spaces. They are visual frequencies and sounds that operate beyond language, encouraging us to recognize transformation as a universal principle and to perceive ourselves as an integral part of a larger, cosmic whole.
