Stabroek: Portus Ojomo kunstenaar van de maand. -

Portus Ojomo, born in 1952, is a painter and sculptor known for blending African art traditions with Western artistic influences. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium, and the Instituto Allende in Mexico. His work is distinguished by vibrant expressions and bold, contrasting colors.
Ojomo has completed several notable commissions, including bronze bas-reliefs in Antwerp, large- scale wall paintings — such as a 45m2 piece for the Antwerp post center — and a mural for a refugee center. His art represented Nigeria at the 2010 FIFA International Fine Arts event in South Africa, and he received the Emile van de Velde Prize for creativity the same year.
He also contributed to the "UNCENSORED" historical exhibition at the Africa Museum in Brussels and has designed architectural art pieces in various mediums, including bronze, ceramics, glass, and mosaics. Alongside his commissioned work, Ojomo actively participates in workshops and exhibits both locally and internationally.
Since the mid-1970s, my artistic journey has been guided by an insatiable desire to explore human experience, emotion, and the search for inner peace. My work defies stylistic boundaries— moving fluidly between realism, expressionism, figurative, and abstract compositions—each serving as a distinct language through which I communicate my vision.
Art, to me, is not confined by a single form but is an evolving conversation between desire and introspection. Each painting is an invitation to the viewer, a visual dialogue that stirs curiosity, evokes emotion, and demands engagement. While no single signature defines my work, a common thread runs through them all—an unrelenting pursuit of depth, connection, and meaning.
My compositions are at once personal and universal, rooted in my own experiences yet open to interpretation. Whether through bold abstraction, emotionally charged expressionism, or the clarity of realism, my paintings seek to disrupt, to captivate, and to resonate beyond the surface.
I welcome art lovers, critics, and collectors to engage with my works not as a fixed identity, but as a dynamic exploration—where each encounter reveals something new, not just about the painting, but about themselves.
